Chitosan is made from chitin, which can be found in nature in the exoskeleton of arthropods such as crabs and shrimps, and in the cell membranes of fungi, yeasts and other microorganisms. The quantity of chitin in the oceans alone amounts to approximately 100 billion tons per year, making it the most widespread natural substance on Earth next to cellulose.





Chitosan is obtained from chitin under controlled conditions and is free of proteins and inorganic components in accordance with the highest purity requirements. The structural components of chitosan, glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine, are cleaved off during the biodegradation process. Both these sugar components exist in the human body and are biocompatible. The physico-mechanical features of chitosan are specifically adjusted by Medovent to match the required properties of a medical device.

Chitosan Catheters

Ureteral stents are thin catheters that allow urine to pass from the renal pelvis into the bladder and thereby ensure transport of urine via the ureter. Due to the formation of biofilms, encrustation of the ureteral stent may occur, which makes its removal problematic and leads to pain for the patient.

Advantages of a ureteral stent made of chitosan:

  • Biocompatible – reduces irritation and inflammation
  • Biodegradable – no (painful) removal necessary
  • Antibacterial – reduces the risk of infection and encrustation



Chitosan fibers

Chitosan microfibers are absorbable monofilaments made of chitosan, which are well suited for further processing (for example to produce suture material). Moreover, chitosan’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties help to limit or prevent local infections.



Chitosan coatings

Coatings made of chitosan are suited for producing medical devices such as catheters, stents, and orthopedic implants with the following properties:

  • Biocompatible
  • Antibacterial
  • Smooth and hydrophilic
